roadtrip update – day nine

i can’t believe that we have been on the road for over a week! we have seen and done so many things- what a trip.

this morning we left kanab, utah after an utterly hilarious night at the kitschy-est motel ever. it was called “sun-n-sand”.

yeah.

so, after rolling into this tiny town in utah at 9pm, nothing was open. no visitor centre, no restaurants, nothing. the first hotel we stopped at (the holiday inn express) was fully booked. tired and road-weary we stopped at the next neon-clad establishment we saw. viola, the sun-n-sand.

when the lovely inn keeper (who looked like he rolled straight in from salt spring) told me they had a room available for $40 a night, i took it. queue crazy horror film music.

the room was definitely worth the $40. that’s it. the walls were covered in fake wood panelling that had fake burned animal scenes and mysterious stains all over it. the lights worked (sorta) and were an odd assortment of florescent and fly infested incandescent. on the walls hung a pair of bull horns and two sweet animal pictures that looked as if they were straight out of a children’s calendar. only bigger. the bathroom… well, don’t get me started.

needless to say we laughed all night and were grateful that we only paid $20 each for the evening’s entertainment- i mean rest.

in the morning we woke up to the best coffee and the most outrageously outfitted continental breakfast. i was shocked. coffee, juice, doughnuts, bagels, watermelon, oranges, bananas- you name it, they had it. the motel owner was up, bright-eyed, and soooo welcoming. bliss.

sun-n-sand

bellys full, we headed down the road to zion.

gasp.

from there we continued down the utah highway in sweltering 40 degree heat (not sure what that is in american- our car gives us the good ol’ celsius) until we hit the sand flats. yet another amazing site to see. we stopped at a rest area just outside of the bonneville salt flats and were blown away. literally.

the wind was blowing so hard and the heat was so intense that i was overwhelmed. juxtaposed with the crazy white landscape of the flats it felt somewhat out of place. i imagined that was what the tundras of the north would look like in the dead of winter but the temperature would be reversed.

anywhoooo, we continued along the road until we ended up in twin falls, idaho. motel 6; our final resting place for the evening. as i sat here writing this post a strange man walked into our room. poor guy was so embarrassed- he thought it was his room. note to self: always lock the motel room door.

goodnight all in interweb land. i must sleep.

p.s. only three months ’till i’m 30!
