The Truth About Your Website

by | Mar 16, 2016 | Strategy

As someone who designs websites for a living, there’s a pervasive mindset I see in the online business world.

It’s this idea that your website automatically markets your business.

If you secretly believe that your website is a virtual shingle that you’ve hung, and you’re waiting for clients and customers to come banging on your virtual doors… this post is for you.

Building a thriving online business involves much more than simply designing a website. A website is one (powerful!) part of your entire marketing strategy that likely also includes activities such as email marketing, paid advertising, events and webinars, in-person conferences, and more.

Your website is your digital home that you must invite people to (and a home without people is a sad thing).

An online business requires building community and connections through your marketing. While your website and email list are the most effective marketing tools you can use to nurture those lasting relationships and lead them through the world of your business, you also have to go where your Most Valued Customer hangs out online.

That may include social media channels like Facebook or Instagram, online groups and forums, in-person events, and more.

Of course, there are so many different opinions about how an online business should be run: various (often conflicting) formulas to follow, miracle plug-ins that promise to turn your site into a conversion machine, training and coaching offers, and step-by-step programs. It’s confusing out there (not to mention expensive)!

You know what I think is the best marketing method to stand out online, to really set your business and offerings apart from the rest?

Be yourself.

While there are many photographers, coaches, nutritionists, and yoga teachers out there, there’s only one YOU. You are what makes your product or service unique, unforgettable, and compelling.

I often find myself meditating on this quote:

“And those who were seen dancing were thought to be insane by those who could not hear the music.” –Nietzsche

YOU are the secret formula you’ve been looking for.

Being the visionary that you are means you’ll be inspired to do things differently, see an angle no one else has, or wander down a path that has been overlooked by the masses.

If the latest trend in marketing doesn’t feel right? Don’t do it.

If your heart is really pulling you in a direction you’ve been told is unconventional? Follow the call.

When you marry your self-awareness with a strategic marketing plan, you:

  •       Gain confidence in yourself
  •       See a clear direction for your business
  •       Stop being distracted by shiny objects

… All of which puts money in your pocket and you on the fast track to being the confident CEO you want to be.
